Question

To ask the Scottish Government how recently published draft regulations that require a Standard of Headship for new headteachers will help drive attainment through school leadership.

Answer

We know that effective school leadership is key to ensuring successful outcomes for learners and will help achieve excellence and equity for all. The Standard for Headship awarded by the General Teaching Council for Scotland outlines the skills and knowledge headteachers must demonstrate if they are to successfully lead a school and accordingly the draft regulations, which are the subject of the current consultation, will require that all teachers appointed to their first headteacher post must hold the Standard for Headship. This is part of the overall strategy to strengthen the quality of the teaching profession and close the attainment gap.
