Meeting of the Parliament [Draft]

Strengthening Committees’ Effectiveness

Meeting date: 6 November 2025

Ruth Maguire

I appreciate the member’s giving way, and I enjoyed working with him on the Education, Children and Young People Committee. I wonder whether, when he talks about our party rosettes coming off, rather than meaning our principles, he is talking about how we interact with folk who have different views in committee. What he means, I think, is that it is not about our party policies or our fundamental political beliefs but about negotiation and the valuing of other people’s beliefs and views.

Maternity Services (Safety)

Meeting date: 29 October 2025

Ruth Maguire

Any negative childbirth experience can have short-term and long-term adverse consequences for women and their babies. It has been linked to difficulties with breastfeeding, poor self-rated health, post-traumatic stress and post-natal depression. What assurance can the cabinet secretary provide that support is available to women who, due to feeling fearful or being in physical distress, have had a negative experience of childbirth?

To ask the Scottish Government what representations non-governmental organisations have made to it regarding its work to support humanitarian assistance in Palestine. (S6O-05030)

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 8 October 2025

Ruth Maguire

The global sumud flotilla is a coalition of everyday people who believe in human dignity and the power of non-violent action. All 42 boats in that historic mission were illegally intercepted while attempting to break Israel’s siege on Gaza. Four hundred and sixty-two people were kidnapped in international waters, including Scottish citizens. Does the cabinet secretary share my dismay at reports of the terrible treatment of those humanitarians, and what representations has the Scottish Government made, either directly to Israel or through the United Kingdom Government, and what response has it received?

Housing (Scotland) Bill: Stage 3

Meeting date: 24 September 2025

Ruth Maguire

I welcome what the cabinet secretary has said about the implementation of part 2 of the Domestic Abuse (Protection) (Scotland) Act 2021. Can she give an indication of when that might happen?

First Minister’s Question Time

Meeting date: 11 September 2025

Ruth Maguire

I know how committed the First Minister is to eliminating child poverty. The work that the Scottish Government has done to date has made a difference. Lots of things give babies and their parents a good start—love, information and support, and play opportunities—but there is strong evidence that where parents experience the psychological, emotional and material impact of poverty in their baby’s first year, it can have a deep and lasting impact on a baby’s development. Does the First Minister recognise how much income matters to a baby’s development, that spending on our youngest citizens is a crucial investment and that preventing the harms of poverty from taking root in the first year of a child’s life is transformational not just for individual babies and families but for our society as a whole?

First Minister’s Question Time

Meeting date: 11 September 2025

Ruth Maguire

To ask the First Minister, in light of reports of the rising rate of poverty for families with a baby under one and new evidence from Save the Children that increasing best start grant and best start foods payments could significantly reduce the child poverty rate for this priority group, whether the Scottish Government will consider increasing these payments. (S6F-04281)

Meeting of the Parliament

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 10 September 2025

Ruth Maguire

To ask the Scottish Government what work it is doing to support sustainable farming and food production that is based on improving biodiversity. (S6O-04900)

Meeting of the Parliament

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 10 September 2025

Ruth Maguire

As of last week, support payments of more than £322 million had reached the accounts of farmers and crofters. Uniquely in the United Kingdom, Scotland has maintained direct payments, showing that the Scottish National Party values the work of farmers and crofters and knows the importance of stability and the ability to plan. How much of that funding has been received by Ayrshire agricultural businesses compared with equivalent businesses in England, thanks to the SNP’s policies?

Meeting of the Parliament

Gaza

Meeting date: 3 September 2025

Ruth Maguire

The crimes of Israel against the Palestinian people demand concrete action from the international community, such as the welcome pause in awards to arms companies outlined by the First Minister. Boycott, divestment and sanctions are a peaceful and effective way to encourage compliance with international law. Will he instruct his Government to ensure that it is deploying against Israel, and all those profiting from the genocide, every single non-violent punitive measure at its disposal until such a time as Israel ends its brutal, violent and illegal occupation of Palestine, genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity?
