Education, Children and Young People Committee [Draft]

University of Dundee

Meeting date: 25 June 2025

Douglas Ross

Sorry—hold on. Staff were clearly going to be under threat as a result of the situation. Students were going to be worried. Tens of millions of pounds were going to have to be saved somehow, and someone with decades of experience at the university, who told us at the very beginning of the meeting how proud he was of that institution, tells the Funding Council, “I’m just dropping you a line to say that the university I have been part of for so long is in such financial crisis that we’re looking at saving £25 million to £30 million.”

I think that that shows a complete lack of any concern about or understanding of the gravity of what you were about to impart to that university community, which has led to the situation today. Do you not accept that?

Do you think that that comes across in your email?

Dr McGeorge, did you at any point communicate to any vice-principals that they could not attend any committee meetings?

So, there will not be any evidence to substantiate the claim that I have received that you personally advised vice-principals not to attend.

Nothing at all.

There is a difference between acknowledging and accepting. Do you accept that your court failed in its governance responsibilities in June 2024?

You did.

You did, because you said that, if you felt that questions were not relevant and they were operational, you would not allow them. You have literally just said that.

I am sorry, but that question was not for you, Dr McGeorge.

A number of people have asked about this, and we have not really got to the bottom of it. On the management accounts that were not provided in periods 9, 10 and 11, page 33 of the Gillies report says that it is not clear why that happened, and I still do not think it is clear why that happened. Crucially, who decided that those papers would not be provided?
