Bail and Release from Custody (Scotland) Bill

The Bill makes changes to the law in two main areas:

  • decisions about granting bail to people accused of a crime
  • arrangements for the release of some prisoners and the support that is provided to those who leave prison

Committee Adviser sought

The Criminal Justice Committee is looking for an adviser to provide advice and assistance as it scrutinises the Bail and Release from Custody (Scotland) Bill at Stage 1.

Specifically, the adviser will assist the Committee in its scrutiny of the provisions in the Bill on the legislative framework for the granting of pre-trial bail.

Knowledge and experience

The adviser will preferably have had experience working in a court environment and of the approach to bail decisions under both solemn and summary procedures.

They will also have general expertise on the approach to bail and remand in the criminal justice system in Scotland and will have particular knowledge of the current law/rules/guidance governing pre-trial bail and how these impact on decisions on the granting of bail.
