I am not sure how formal this would need to be, but are you suggesting that additional duties need to be placed on SEPA?

ESS recommended that the Government should establish a new oversight body. My understanding is that that is not where you want to go. What steps will you take to ensure that there is holistic oversight of the system of air quality monitoring? Will you keep an open mind on whether there should be an oversight body in the future?

Meeting of the Parliament

General Question Time

Meeting date: 20 April 2023

Free bus travel is great but, in parts of Scotland, bus services have been taken away altogether, including in Hamilton, following the withdrawal of the X1 bus. Local people with free bus passes therefore have to use cars and taxis. That is bad for climate action and is exacerbating social and economic inequality.

Three weeks ago, I met 100 residents who want to see action from transport chiefs and joined-up support. They are not getting that from the Government or from others. Will the minister, whom I welcome to his new post, meet me and campaigners to see how we can find a way forward?

I welcome Jenny Minto to her new role.

Worryingly, the report also shows that the number of deaths from respiratory disease increased by nearly 8 per cent. Asthma and Lung UK has said that North Lanarkshire is an area in which people are more likely to die of lung disease compared with other parts of Scotland. Will the minister and her team discuss that with NHS Lanarkshire and let us know what action can be taken?

To ask the Scottish Government what discussions it has had with food producers, manufacturers and distributors regarding supply chains and how to tackle food insecurity and food poverty. (S6O-02103)

I am grateful to the cabinet secretary for her response, and I am glad that she mentioned FareShare. We are seeing the highest rate of inflation in food prices for almost 50 years, and FareShare has reiterated the struggles that it is experiencing. As colleagues know, FareShare redistributes surplus food to charities and communities across the country, but it is seeing a reduction in what is available to it because of industry pressures.

Last year, the then Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Islands convened a summit on the issue. Will there be a follow up to that, and what more can the Government do to support charities such as FareShare?

Thank you. The disadvantage of being the last member to ask questions is that, as I am being told, I only have about two minutes left. Stuart Hay was nodding, but I want to ask a supplementary question, so perhaps he will also comment briefly on that.

Gavin Thomson raised the issue of inequality and Dr Fuller added his comments on that. I am aware of some research by the Woodland Trust that looks at tree equity. I do not need to rehearse to you all the benefits of trees and vegetation, but the Woodland Trust found that the most deprived areas coincide with areas where there is the least tree cover and vegetation. I am keen to hear, in a couple of words, what should be done to tackle the link between deprived areas, lack of access to nature and air pollution. I will bring in Stuart Hay first, and then Craig McLaren.

Shauna Clarke made a serious statement about a workforce crisis in the environmental health profession. I am keen to hear a bit more about that. Is that to do with attracting people in at undergraduate level? Is it about retaining staff? Is there something else going on?
