  • Submitted by: Kenneth Gibson, Cunninghame North, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 23 December 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02641

That the Parliament acknowledges the 200th Anniversary of the First Hellenic Republic; understands that Greek citizens declared their independence from the Ottoman Empire on 1 January 1822 and established the first provisional Greek state at the First National Assembly of Epidaurus during the War of Independence; further understands that the Greeks fought until 1829 and, following this, worked to create a functional country, by addressing the issues that faced a war-ravaged Greece and adopting the first Greek constitution, and understands that, on 20 October 1827, at the Battle of Navarino, the Royal Navy played a decisive role in helping to secure Greek independence.
