Launch of Inclusive Orkney

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 02 December 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02328

That the Parliament welcomes the launch of Inclusive Orkney, a charity that seeks to support and create more inclusive opportunities for children and young people with additional support needs in Orkney; notes that the charity also aims to work with a range of agencies to provide robust signposting for families and provide a support network for families and children with additional needs; understands that the charity has a long-term aim of finding, setting up and establishing an indoor and outdoor space where children and families can come to socialise, support each other and most importantly have fun in a safe and welcoming space; further understands that the charity has taken inspiration from The Yard charity, based in Edinburgh, which supports disabled children and young people up to the age of 25 and their families through adventure play; believes that the idea for the charity came about as a result of the work of a small group of teachers and parents at Glaitness School in Kirkwall who wanted to support children with additional support needs and their families and to increase the opportunities for them outside of school; commends Karin Spence and colleagues for their hard work over many months in establishing the charity; congratulates brother and sister, Lewis and Ava Spence for their successful design in the Inclusive Orkney logo competition; thanks local organisations Voluntary Action Orkney, Active Schools Orkney, and local businesses, Orkney Builders, Patersons, Alfred Fletts, Eddie Frasers, R S Merriman, R Clouston LTD, R S Rendall, B&L Builders, Casey Construction and Heddle Construction, for their support of the launch of Inclusive Orkney, and wishes Inclusive Orkney all the very best for the future.
