The Importance of Scotland's Journalists and News Media

  • Submitted by: Russell Findlay, West Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 05 October 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-01483

That the Parliament pays tribute to the journalists working across Scotland's news media; praises their crucial role in holding politicians, governments and others in positions of power to account on behalf of the public and also exposing wrongdoing, often in the face of threats and intimidation; applauds the country's newspaper industry, which it believes remains vibrant, innovative and vitally important, despite extreme commercial pressures; considers that the role played by local newspapers is often under-appreciated; recognises the need for the media to remain free and not to be cowed by the state or by disproportionate legal restrictions; congratulates all of the participants and winners at the 42nd Scottish Press Awards; notes in particular the achievement of the political editor of The Scottish Sun, Chris Musson, who won the political journalist of the year, journalist of the year, reporter of the year and scoop of the year categories, and recognises the role played by Chris and Scotland's other journalists for maintaining their professionalism and service to the public throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
