ScotRail Timetable Proposals

  • Submitted by: Alex Rowley, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 26 August 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00933

That the Parliament is concerned by reports of proposed reductions to Scotland’s rail services and the impact that this could have on passengers; believes that the proposals to cut approximately 300 rail routes a day and increasing journey times goes against any commitments to greener travel policies; acknowledges the reported concerns regarding the proposed timetable changes in Mid Scotland and Fife, which it understands will see the removal of almost all direct trains between the two sides of the Fife Circle, with a change at Inverkeithing required, the removal of all direct trains between Kirkcaldy and Perth, the reduction of semi-fast trains between Kirkcaldy and Edinburgh, and increased journey times on the Perth-Edinburgh route and the main service between Inverness and Perth/Edinburgh travelling via Stirling, with passengers having to change trains, as well as the through services between Fife and Tweedbank discontinued, with passengers having to change trains at Edinburgh Waverley; considers that the proposed timetable changes will result in increased travel times and potential overcrowding; believes that greater use of public transport is vital if Scotland is to meet pressing climate change targets, and considers that these proposed cuts would decimate rail services at a time when investment in greener forms of travel should be a priority.
