Community Clean-ups

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 09 August 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00817
  • Current status: Has not yet achieved cross-party support

That the Parliament notes the considerable amount of littering and fly-tipping that is reportedly happening across Scotland, including in the Glasgow Shettleston constituency; believes that it is not sustainable for local authorities to be expected to solve this issue themselves; considers that all individuals and organisations have a responsibility for this; acknowledges the work of community groups, such as Cleanup Glasgow, that aim to promote personal responsibility and to begin a drive to change behaviour to tackle the litter crisis; notes that Cleanup Glasgow provides help and support to establish community clean-up groups in all areas of the city; acknowledges the positive work done in this regard by many schools and young people; understands that the group advocates more school trips to national parks and other parts of Scotland to foster appreciation of the country’s natural beauty and quality environment, and notes the view that a change in mindset is the single greatest change required to ensure that Scotland's streets remain clean.
