The Shooting of Dutch Journalist, Peter R de Vries

  • Submitted by: Russell Findlay, West Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 08 July 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00622

That the Parliament pays tribute to the courageous Dutch journalist, Peter R de Vries, and hopes that he makes a full recovery after being shot in Amsterdam; expresses solidarity with him, and other journalists in Scotland and elsewhere, for their important reporting of organised crime; condemns those responsible for this targeted attack, which is suspected to have been connected to his work investigating drugs gangs based in the Netherlands; understands that these gangs have links to organised crime groups in Scotland and supply a significant amount of drugs that contribute to the country’s record drug-related deaths, with 1,264 recorded in 2019, and urges Police Scotland, the National Crime Agency and other agencies based in the UK and elsewhere to work together to disrupt and prosecute those involved in organised crime, which causes significant harm to communities.
