#RightToFood National Day of Action

  • Submitted by: Rhoda Grant, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 28 June 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00538

That the Parliament notes that 28 June 2021 is a national day of action supporting the #RightToFood movement to secure a statutory right to food in law; understands that the day of action has been developed by Ian Byrne MP and the Fans Supporting Foodbanks national network; notes that the call for a right to food to be enshrined in law is backed by a wide range of trade unions, including the Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union, faith groups, third sector organisations, businesses and community groups; further notes that Liverpool became the UK’s first RightToFood City, serving as a catalyst for many other towns and cities across the country to back the campaign, including Manchester, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Liverpool Combined Authority, Rotherham, Totnes, Brighton and Hove, Haringey, St Helens, Newcastle, Portsmouth and Durham, and looks forward to Scottish cities, towns and local authority areas joining them; calls on all MSPs to support the day of action and raise awareness by taking and posting a photograph of themselves, constituents and supporters holding an "I support the Right To Food" poster, as well as sharing support online using the #RightToFood hashtag, and calls on government to deliver on the five key asks of universal free school meals, support for community kitchens, wages and social security that lift people out of food poverty, ensured food security as policy and independent enforcement.
