Clean Air Day

  • Submitted by: Mark Ruskell, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 15 June 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00384

That the Parliament recognises that 17 June 2021 is Clean Air Day; understands that the theme is "protect our children’s health from air pollution", and that poor air quality can result in the development and exacerbation of lung diseases; regrets that air pollution causes around 36,000 deaths in the UK, with an estimated 2,000 premature deaths in Scotland linked to air pollution; notes that greater use of public transport can reduce levels of air pollution; however further notes that Asthma UK and British Lung Foundation Scotland recently found that almost 60% of people in Scotland are concerned about using public transport during the COVID-19 pandemic; encourages drivers to not use their cars and opt for active travel or public transport on 17 June, and welcomes the commitment by the Scottish Government to publish the new Cleaner Air for Scotland Strategy later in 2021.
