Edinburgh Zoo Welcomes Giraffes

  • Submitted by: Alex Cole-Hamilton, Edinburgh Western, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 14 May 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00015

That the Parliament welcomes the arrival of four giraffes to Edinburgh Zoo, Ronnie, Arrow, Gerald and Fennessy; notes that this is the first time in 15 years that it has been able to house giraffes; notes that numbers of the species in the wild have declined by almost 30% in the last 40 years; understands that this is largely due to habitat loss and poaching; believes that the arrival of the giraffes will contribute to wild giraffe conservation by using genetics to help the Giraffe Conservation Fund; notes the success of reintroductions of giraffes across Uganda, and wishes Ronnie, Arrow, Gerald and Fennessy a healthy and happy life at the zoo.
