  • Submitted by: Jamie Greene, West Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 23 February 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24195

That the Parliament commends Carer Aware at University, which is a free online module available to all staff at Scotland’s universities that offers new opportunities for reflection on the challenges facing students with unpaid caring responsibilities, including the impact of their education; pays tribute to Carers Trust Scotland, Open University Scotland and the student care practitioners from practitioners from the University of Stirling, Heriot-Watt University and Glasgow Caledonian University for taking part in and putting together this programme; understands that that 84% of the students carers who responded found maintaining good mental health while studying to be a challenge, with 61% finding concentrating in class difficult; pays tribute to the thousands of student carers enrolled in course across Scotland; and commits to establishing cross-party efforts to help support them by helping to raise awareness of these challenges and establishing similar schemes in the future.
