World Car Free Day

  • Submitted by: Kevin Stewart, Aberdeen Central, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 30 September 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-14708

That the Parliament notes that 22 September 2024 was marked as World Car Free Day, a global day to support more sustainable transportation; supports those who celebrated the date by travelling by train, bike and foot in order to address air pollution and reduce carbon emissions; understands that Scotland’s bus network supports around 75% of all public transport journeys, far greater than any other form of transport; further understands that First Bus, through its operations in Glasgow and Aberdeen, is in the process of decarbonising its bus fleet, with the aim of reaching net zero emissions by 2035, including the introduction of zero-emission electric buses on a greater proportion of journeys, supported by hydrogen buses on certain routes in Aberdeen; considers that bus operators and the Scottish Government have a shared commitment to reduce transport emissions and congestion, while increasing reliability and availability of bus services, and commends the efforts of bus users, staff and operators to improve the bus network, as well as local authorities that provide priority measures to help to speed up bus journey times, in order to provide environmentally sustainable journeys into the future.
