Orkney-born Adventurer Succeeds in South Pole Expedition

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 24 January 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-07563

That the Parliament congratulates Orkney-born adventurer, Ben Weber, who successfully reached the South Pole on 13 January 2023 after a 58-day, 700-mile solo trek across Antarctica for Cancer Research UK; commends Ben for successfully completing the mammoth challenge where he endured -40C wind chill, round-the-clock daylight and treacherous ice fields and crevasses, whilst pulling his sled of equipment and supplies weighing 110kg and coping with a neck injury suffered early in the expedition; recognises that Ben has raised nearly £4,000 for Cancer Research UK in memory of his mother, Marian, who sadly passed away from kidney cancer in 2018; further recognises that this is the latest expedition completed by Ben for Cancer Research UK who travelled 560km across Greenland in 2022; acknowledges that he celebrated reaching the South Pole by having a dram of Highland Park, inspired by his birthplace of Orkney where he grew up in Stronsay and Stromness until the age of 10, and wishes Ben a safe journey home to Carrbridge and all the best for the future.
