Biochar Regulation

  • Submitted by: Stephen Kerr, Central Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 17 January 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-07526
  • Current status: Has not yet achieved cross-party support

That the Parliament believes that the current environmental regulations for biochar are out of date and preventing commercialisation of this product; understands that optimised biochar can enable nutrient recovery in water, remove impurities in gases and metal contamination in soil, and direct CO2 capture in exhaust systems; believes that such benefits can support efforts to both protect the natural environment and grow the green economy, including in the Central Scotland region, and notes the view that Scotland must demonstrate a leading role in shaping new environmental regulations.
