Ayr and Prestwick Lions Club Donate to those in Need of Sight

  • Submitted by: Sharon Dowey, South Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 16 January 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-07515

That the Parliament applauds Ayr and Prestwick Lions Club for its initiative to donate thousands of pairs of used glasses to underdeveloped countries; understands that the club's initiative marked World Sight Day, which is held on the second Thursday of October each year; further understands that the club filled 10 boxes with 360 pairs of glasses, which were sent to clinics in Africa and South Asia; notes that the initiative was supported by local optometrists who offered drop-off points and also encouraged their customers to get involved by recycling their old glasses; acknowledges that the club has run this sight initiative since 2016 and collected nearly 17,000 pairs of glasses; considers that the work of the club is crucial in helping those in need of sight, but also a practical way to recycle, and wishes the club and all involved every success as they continue to take forward on what it believes is as an incredible initiative.
