Riots in Brazil

  • Submitted by: Maggie Chapman, North East Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 17 January 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-07438

That the Parliament notes with distress the riots that took place in Brazil on 8 January 2023; condemns these reported acts of political violence, which, it understands, saw supporters of the former far-right leader, Jair Bolsonaro, storm government buildings, including the supreme court, the presidential palace and congress, in what it believes was a failed attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; further condemns the reported actions of far-right extremists, who, it considers, have refused to accept the result of a democratic election, spending recent weeks, it understands, camping outside army bases across the country and calling for a military coup; understands that President Lula has promised swift action to address these reported “acts of vandals and fascists”; joins world leaders in condemning the riots, and offers its support to President Lula during this troubling time.
