  • Submitted by: Miles Briggs, Lothian, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 10 January 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-07326

That the Parliament congratulates Miya Turner, a pupil from Portobello High School, on being selected for the Scottish National Debating Team, representing Scotland; acknowledges that Miya and four other debaters will be representing Scotland at the prestigious World Schools Debating Championships, which will be taking place in Vietnam in July 2023; understands that this is the first time that a pupil from Portobello High School has been selected; recognises that, at the World Championships, teams from around the world debate on a variety of topics, both prepared and unprepared, and that debaters are tested on their general knowledge, critical thinking ability, public speaking skills and ability to work as a team; notes that the last time that Scotland was crowned World Champions at this competition was in Cape Town in 2012, and wishes Miya and her fellow debaters the best of luck at the World Schools Debating Championships in Vietnam next summer.
