Supporting Communication Workers Union Postal Worker Strikes

  • Submitted by: Emma Roddick, Highlands and Islands, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 16 December 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-07275

That the Parliament supports members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), which represents 115,000 postal workers across the UK, including at least 11,000 in Scotland, in its ongoing pay dispute with Royal Mail; believes that CWU members are not striking lightly; understands that this is the first UK-wide strike action that the union has taken over pay since 1971; recognises what it sees as the invaluable role that CWU members and all postal workers play in contributing to the economy and society throughout Scotland, particularly in rural communities throughout the Highlands and Islands, where universal service really matters; is concerned that the universal service, which it believes underpins Royal Mail, may now be under threat; believes that postal workers deserve a fair pay settlement; understands that the Post Office parent organisation falls under the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, and calls, therefore, on the UK Government to ensure that postal workers receive what it considers a fair pay deal, without adversely affecting their current working terms and conditions.
