Congratulates Gillian McLaren on Portraits and Tales from a Hospital Bed, Exhibition Opening

  • Submitted by: Evelyn Tweed, Stirling, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 09 December 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-07170

That the Parliament congratulates Gillian McLaren from Stirling on the opening of her exhibition, entitled Portraits and Tales from a Hospital Bed, at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee; understands that Gillian created an intimate collection of 22 sketches of NHS staff who cared for her following her diagnosis of advanced ovarian cancer in March 2020; acknowledges that the collection portrays cleaners, nurses, porters, doctors, health care workers, phlebotomists and dieticians who Gillian met, and who played a role as part of the team that cared for her; recognises that Gillian's diagnosis and treatment occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Scotland was in lockdown, and as such the portraits and accompanying stories represent an significant period, not only in Gillian's life, but in NHS Scotland as a whole; notes that Gillian's exhibition opened on 25 November at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, with the collection being taken into the permanent collection of NHS Tayside, with assistance from NHS Tayside Health Fund, and encourages everyone to be aware of the symptoms of ovarian cancer, which that include persistent stomach pain, persistent bloating, difficulty eating or feeling full more quickly, and needing to urinate more frequently.
