Bahrain Human Rights

  • Submitted by: Katy Clark, West Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 10 October 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-06267

That the Parliament notes with great concern what it sees as serious ongoing human rights violations in Bahrain, including the arbitrary detention of political prisoners in contravention of international law; understands that Bahrain continues to use the death penalty, and that the sentences of inmates who have alleged torture have still not been commuted, including those whose detention was declared arbitrary by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention; unreservedly condemns what it considers the imprisonment of political opposition leaders, and the deliberate systematic denial of adequate medical care reported in many of their cases; believes that Bahrain’s 12 November 2022 elections will lack legitimacy and make a mockery of democratic principles while opposition leaders continue to be unlawfully detained, and former members of dissolved opposition societies are unable to stand for office; notes with great regret that Bahrain has been named by the United Nations Secretary General in their 2022 annual report on reprisals against those who cooperate with the United Nations, reportedly for a fifth year in a row, and supports what it understands to be widespread international calls from the human rights community, UN experts, global academics, the EU and UK parliamentarians for those named in this report, as well as all imprisoned opposition leaders, human rights defenders and activists in Bahrain, to be released immediately and unconditionally from prison and provided with redress.
