Think Nature Health Walks is Promoting Opportunities to Travel Sustainably in the Highlands

  • Submitted by: Emma Roddick, Highlands and Islands, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 29 September 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-06070

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the significant challenges faced by communities in the Highlands and Islands to swap to safe and efficient active travel; commends the Think Nature Health Walks initiative for its continued efforts in encouraging residents in rural Highlands to walk, cycle and wheel as part of their journeys, and in promoting greater use of outdoor spaces among the communities; understands that the initiative organises regular, safe and social health walks using walking routes in close proximity to local services and amenities in order to provide walkers with the confidence and motivation to adopt active routes for everyday journeys; notes that Think Nature Health Walks works in partnership with local projects to encourage usage of all modes of active travel, community transport and car sharing schemes; understands that the initiative works to identify gaps in provision of active travel opportunities and works to remove the barriers that it believes are preventing local residents from changing their behaviour towards adopting more active lifestyles and travelling green; notes that the initiative is funded by a combination of grants from NHS Highland and Scotland’s walking charity, Paths for All; welcomes all efforts to protect the environment and to encourage active travel in the Highlands and across Scotland, and wishes the initiative continued success with its current and future projects.
