Commemorating the 85th Anniversary of the Kirkintilloch Disaster

  • Submitted by: Rona Mackay, Strathkelvin and Bearsden, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 26 September 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-06009

That the Parliament commemorates the 85th anniversary of the Kirkintilloch Disaster; notes that, on 15 September 1937, 10 young men and boys from Achill Island on the west coast of Ireland died in a bothy fire on a Kirkintilloch potato farm during the height of the harvest season when many Irish settlers emigrated to Scotland for work; understands that their accommodation was reportedly described as "not fit for cattle”; considers that migrant workers are an important part of Scotland’s social fabric, economic development and demographic growth, and hopes that lessons can still be learned from the disaster when it comes to treatment and respect for all workers.
