  • Submitted by: Finlay Carson, Galloway and West Dumfries, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 21 September 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05945

That the Parliament warmly congratulates a group of eight members of the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs (SAYFC), who successfully reached the summit of Africa’s highest peak, the mighty Kilimanjaro standing at 19,341 feet tall, having trudged through gruelling terrain, battling extreme temperature swings as well as altitude sickness in order to raise more than £18,300 for three worthy charities, the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation for Motor Neurone Disease, Chron’s and Colitis UK and RSABI in recognition of what it considers its sterling work in helping those with poor mental health, particularly prevalent, it understands, within the farming sector; notes that they realised almost twice their original charity goal; understands that this expedition took more than three years of exhaustive planning and preparation to be both physically and mentally fit to tackle, what is widely considered, one of the most challenging tasks known to mankind; acknowledges also the friendship and help afforded by the people of Tanzania throughout their time in Africa, sharing many special memories that will remain with the Scottish group for the rest of their lives, and wishes all those involved in the planning and taking part in the challenge every success in the future as they look to attempt another memorable charity-driven event.
