Litter Pick and Path Maintenance Day on Ben Nevis

  • Submitted by: Liz Smith, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 06 September 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05816

That the Parliament congratulates the Nevis Team along with the other various outdoor groups and volunteers who took part in a litter pick and path maintenance day on Ben Nevis on 27 August 2022; commends the hard work of volunteers in clearing 20kg of litter from Britain’s highest mountain, bringing the total waste cleared to 91.5kg in 2022; recognises what it sees as the importance of conserving Ben Nevis’s natural environment following the significant increase in tourists climbing the hill over recent years and the vast physical and financial challenges it understands that this creates for conservation groups in sustaining the path from erosion and protecting the landscape from manmade waste; considers that it is important to increase awareness of the harm that irresponsible behaviour on Ben Nevis and Scotland’s wild places causes to nature, and further considers that it is important to find solutions to the issues of waste and reaching the correct balance between protecting the environment and allowing everyone access to enjoy the unique mountains that Scotland has to offer.
