Sustainable Ammunition and Net Zero

  • Submitted by: Sharon Dowey, South Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.

  • Motion reference: S6M-05782

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the importance of sustainable ammunition as part of Scotland’s progress towards net zero emissions targets and reducing plastic usage; acknowledges the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) Scotland's calls for a voluntary five-year transition for shooting, to move away from lead shot and single-use plastics for live quarry shooting; understands that numerous rural organisations have committed to the Aim to Sustain partnership and are in agreement over the five-year transition period; believes that the transition to steel shot and biodegradable cases and wads is beneficial not only for the environment, but also the long-term future of shooting; commends BASC Scotland for its promotion of sustainable ammunition to its members, and notes the reported concerns of the industry at the proposed UK REACH restrictions dossier published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which, it understands, advocates for what it sees as a short 18-month transition period, given the difficulties brought about by global supply chain issues.
