Music Venue Trust Project Own Our Venues

  • Submitted by: Pauline McNeill, Glasgow, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 06 July 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05297

That the Parliament recognises the commitment of the Music Venue Trust project, Own Our Venues; believes that it lays out a radical and exciting future for Scotland's grassroots music venues where local communities, music fans, artists and the music industry can come together to take ownership of the vital spaces in which great music happens; recognises what it sees as the essential role played by such venues in developing the next wave of fantastic Scottish artists; appreciates the ambitious £3.5 million target set by the trust, which it estimates will allow the purchase of nine venues including Glasgow City’s Glad Café; understands that this figure will be reached by encouraging people to purchase shares in Music Venue Properties, a community benefit society, which purchases freeholds of grassroots music venues and rents back to operators at a fairer rate than many current landlords to ensure a better understanding of the industry and to encourage growth; applauds that investors in the society will receive 3% on their investment, and wishes the trust well in its aims.
