GMB Workforce at BiFab Stand in Solidarity with Non-Paid Workers

  • Submitted by: Alex Rowley, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 29 June 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05165

That the Parliament congratulates the GMB trade union workforce at BiFab, in Fife, for, it understands, standing in solidarity with subcontractors over a dispute surrounding their non-payment; understands that, according to the GMB trade union, InfraStrata, which manages the site in Methil under its Harland & Wolff brand, failed to pay more than 100 Portuguese workers involved in building renewable energy components for the Neart na Gaoithe wind farm on the Firth of Forth; further understands that the subcontractor that was managing the staff, Santa Cruz, ordered employees to sit in cabins until payment was made and that when payment was further delayed the workers were joined by core staff in the walkout at the site in Methil; understands that all staff have now returned to work and will face no disciplinary action or loss of pay and that unions are now expected to negotiate a full trade union recognition agreement with the employer, and commends the GMB trade union workers for what it sees as their act of solidarity, but believes that this highlights clearly why Scotland needs an industrial strategy for manufacturing, skills, training and jobs that puts workers’ rights and secure terms and conditions at the forefront, along with giving young people the opportunities to well-paid, skilled and secure jobs working in manufacturing.
