  • Submitted by: Michelle Thomson, Falkirk East, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 24 June 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05066

That the Parliament congratulates Sustainable Thinking Scotland (STS) CIC, based at Kinneil Estate in Bo’ness, on winning the Climate Conscious award at the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) awards held at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow on 15 June 2022; notes that STS was established in 2017 by Sean Kerr and Steve McQueen as a social enterprise designed to address a wide range of social and environmental issues within the local area; recognises that the project will focus on several key aspects, including the responsible disposal of local wood waste leading to a reduction in the use of current landfill disposal methods, carbon abatement through the production of biochar, research and application of biochar as a soil amendment and a nutrient rich growth medium, the production of fresh fruit and vegetables for donation to the local food bank to distribute in Bo’ness and the surrounding area, and generating revenue from the sale of a range of biochar products to allow further investment in meeting the social aims of the company; further recognises the tireless work of Sean and Steve over the last five years, most of which it understands has been carried out on their own, in securing support from organisations, including FirstPort and the University of Glasgow; believes that the work of STS will have a significant impact towards creating a circular economy by utilising natural resources that would normally go to waste to grow fresh fruit and vegetables for local communities; commends Sean, Steve and everyone at STS for their dedication to their communities and to creating a better, more sustainable world; congratulates them on winning the Climate Conscious SCVO award, and looks forward to seeing their vision come to fruition in the near future.
