  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 26 May 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-04585

That the Parliament congratulates the Gaan the Distance for Ukraine appeal by The Orcadian and McAdie and Reeve on successfully reaching Suceava and Voronets in Romania to deliver vital aid donated by the Orkney community for Ukrainian refugees; commends Mark Harcus, The Orcadian sub-editor, and Paddie O’Neill, HGV driver with McAdie and Reeve, who have made the over 2,000-mile journey from Orkney to near the Ukrainian border in the McAdie and Reeve lorry and trailer loaded full of supplies; understands that Mark and Paddie left Orkney on 16 May 2022 and unloaded the donated supplies of bedding, pillows, clothes, towels, blankets, mattresses, hospital beds, prams, wheelchairs, toiletries, sanitary products, sleeping bags and children's stationary and toys in Suceava and Voronets on 23 May; notes that the appeal was launched in March with a number of local businesses across the isles serving as collection points; believes that the overwhelming response has demonstrated the very best of the Orkney community’s generosity and its solidarity with Ukraine since the illegal and barbaric invasion began; further believes that the appeal will make an enormous contribution to local humanitarian efforts in Romania where more than a million Ukrainian refugees have fled to since the war began; recognises that the joint appeal has also raised around £15,000 for the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal; applauds the teams at The Orcadian and McAdie and Reeve, and all those volunteering to help the appeal, on this outstanding achievement and for their determination to help the Ukrainian people; thanks everyone who made a donation to the appeal, and wishes Mark and Paddie a safe journey home to Orkney.
