Electrical Safety First Investigation

  • Submitted by: Clare Adamson, Motherwell and Wishaw, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 25 May 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-04530

That the Parliament welcomes reports of the investigation by the charity Electrical Safety First into electrical devices that claim to help householders save on energy bills; understands that Electrical Safety First works to reduce the number of deaths, injuries and accidents caused by electricity in the home; further understands that, as part of the charity’s investigation, four plug-in electrical devices were purchased for testing and all failed basic safety standards with one device exploding, risking fire or electric shock; notes reports of persistent concerns around sub-standard or faulty electrical products, with particular concerns related to the sale of unsafe goods on online marketplaces by third party sellers, resulting, it understands, in significantly lower consumer protection standards; condemns what it sees as exploitative selling practices that seek to capitalise on increasing energy costs by undercutting safety standards and selling inferior goods at a cheaper price; acknowledges Electrical Safety First’s recommendations to purchase electrical goods from known and trusted retailers, either from the manufacturer’s website or from a recognised high street name, and commends the work of Electrical Safety First, and other safety organisations, in raising awareness of these issues for the benefit of consumer protection.
