Borders Schools Countryside Day

  • Submitted by: Christine Grahame, Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 13 May 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-04368

That the Parliament welcomes the annual Borders Schools Countryside Day, which has been held by the Border Union Agricultural Society (BUAS) since its centenary year in 2013, taking place on 17 May 2022 with the theme this year being based on the UN Sustainable Development Goal 15 "Life on Land"; understands that the event is designed for 1,250 Primary 5 children from all 65 schools in the Scottish Borders to increase their understanding of rural skills and life, by learning about things like wool production, beekeeping, the importance of soil, cereals, milking, trees, woodland, stick-making, animals both domestic and farmed, including an exhibition of the survival of rare breeds, as well as learning about healthy eating, seasonal foods and the significance of food miles; notes that it is hoped that, as a result of this, the children are better informed about the landscape around them, the importance of looking after the environment and how it impacts on their own wellbeing and health; recognises that the event is made possible by around 170 teachers, 50 different demonstrations involving at least 250 people, plus over 150 stewards, as well as the support of the Scottish Borders Council, Fallago Fund, BASF, and local charities who all play a critical part in supporting the BUAS in delivering this event, and hopes all attending enjoy their day.
