Celebrating Reusable Nappy Week 2022

  • Submitted by: Monica Lennon, Central Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 26 April 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-04105

That the Parliament acknowledges that April 25 to 1 May 2022 is Reusable Nappy Week; understands that this is an international awareness week, which was originally called Real Nappy Week and launched by the Women's Environment Network in 1997; considers that it is an opportunity for families and individuals, as well as national and local government and all members of the reusable nappy community, including retailers, manufacturers, laundry services, and nappy libraries, to come together and have conversations about the benefits of using reusable nappies as an alternative to single-use nappies; understands that using reusable nappies instead of disposables can offset as much as 38.2 kg of single-use plastic per baby over 2.5 years; believes that nappy libraries, which are normally run by volunteers and hire out reusable nappies to interested individuals, play an important role in educating and supporting parents who are choosing to reuse; commends local authorities, such as North Ayrshire Council, who have a birth to potty nappy incentive to encourage its residents to make the switch to reusable nappies, and encourages the Scottish Government to support reusable nappy initiatives across the country, to help to reduce the environmental impact of single-use nappies and alleviate the cost of living crisis.
