Who Cares? Scotland’s Tend Our Light Report

  • Submitted by: Martin Whitfield, South Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 03 March 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-03400

That the Parliament supports Who Cares? Scotland’s report, Tend Our Light, on care experienced people’s mental health, which was launched at the Care Convention Twilight Gathering, on 22 February 2022, during the Shetland-led, nationwide Festival of Care; understands that the festival is an annual online and in-person series of events, which launched this year on Care Day, on 18 February, and celebrates the brilliance of care experienced people across Scotland through the imagery of lighthouses, and promotes a culture where every care experienced person is loved, feels safe and respected, and is able to shine brightly; further understands from Lynda Greig, a National Representative Body member of Who Cares? Scotland, that the report highlights that of the care experienced people surveyed as part of an Annual Participation Programme, everyone felt their care experience had impacted on their mental health, almost 70% had been unable to access mental health support, almost 80% felt poor mental health affected their relationships, and that trauma can affect care experienced people throughout their lives, and supports the seven actions for change that are proposed by Who Cares? Scotland, including calling for dedicated mental health services and lifelong mental health support for care experienced people, for every child in care to be proactively offered mental health support, an emphasis on supporting loving relationships for care experienced people, for tailored and specialist mental health training designed alongside care experienced people, for mental health education for care experienced people, and the right for care experienced people to choose the type of mental health support that works for them and to be able to access that support quickly.
