Impacts of Brexit and COVID-19 on Trading Standards Scotland

  • Submitted by: Fiona Hyslop, Linlithgow, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 03 March 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-03244
  • Current status: Has not yet achieved cross-party support

That the Parliament recognises the reported increasing pressure on what it considers already under resourced trading standards organisations throughout Scotland, including in the Linlithgow constituency, as a result of the impacts of Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic; believes that the increased pressure on these services, coupled with a reported lack of adequate funding, will severely impact their ability to conduct the new customs checks required as a part of Brexit, which it considers will lead to an increase in low-quality, non-compliant goods entering Scotland; understands that these services have seen a 32% drop in staffing levels over the last nine years, and a reduction in funding from local authorities from £34.7 million in 2010-11 to £32.8 million in 2020-21; notes the calls on the UK Government to urgently increase funding to Trading Standards Scotland to support local trading standards organisations, and further notes the calls on all relevant public bodies to support these organisations in the recruitment and training of more trading standards officers.
