Human Rights Day 2021 #BoycottBeijingOlympics

  • Submitted by: Mercedes Villalba, North East Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 14 December 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02504

That the Parliament notes that 10 December 2021 was annual Human Rights Day, marking the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948; understands that there are deep concerns held by Tibetans, who are resident in Scotland and the wider UK, and Tibet advocacy groups, about what they consider to be the Chinese Government’s history of human rights abuses; further understands that similar human rights concerns are shared by Uyghurs, Southern Mongolians, Hong Kongers, Taiwanese, Chinese human rights activists and international human rights organisations; recognises the Scottish Government’s recent confirmation that neither Scottish Ministers nor officials have any plans to attend the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, and welcomes the recent announcement of a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics by the UK Government, which joins the US, New Zealand, Australia and Lithuania in standing up against what it sees as the Chinese Government’s human rights violations.
