Question

To ask the Scottish Government what discussions it has had with (a) Glasgow City Council and (b) Historic Environment Scotland in relation to supporting the preservation of the category A-listed Egyptian Halls.

Answer

The Scottish Government has not had any recent discussions with either Glasgow City Council or Historic Environment Scotland regarding the Egyptian Halls.

The Scottish Government delivers support for the historic environment through our sponsorship of Historic Environment Scotland, the lead public body responsible for preserving, maintaining and promoting the historic environment. We would look to Historic Environment Scotland to provide preservation advice and guidance to Glasgow City Council and to any other key stakeholders involved with the site.

In February 2025, Glasgow City Council decided to investigate the potential to compulsorily purchase Egyptian Halls. Last autumn they marketed the building, seeking redevelopment proposals that would repair, protect and reuse Egyptian Halls. We understand that marketing is now complete and a preferred developer has been identified. The next stage of the process is to be considered by Glasgow City Council’s Contracts and Property committee on 6th February 2026.

In a parallel process Glasgow City Council served a Defective Buildings Notice on the owner of Egyptian Halls in March 2025. Historic Environment Scotland was consulted on the wording of the notice, which requires stabilisation of the parapet, vegetation removal, repointing of masonry and other repairs. As the owner of the building has not started the works required, the Council’s Building Standards Service is currently preparing to undertake the works.
