Question

To ask the Scottish Government, in situations where council tax bills are unpaid due to a challenge, what its position is on councils instructing sheriff officers to take action before the challenge is considered, and what action it will take on this issue.

Answer

Council Tax is a local tax and it is for local authorities to ensure they comply with the relevant legislation concerning its administration and collection.

It is important that Council Tax Bills are correctly calculated, and I would be concerned if members of the public are being penalised where this is not the case. I will therefore raise this matter with the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities.
