Carers Allowance Supplement

The Social Justice and Social Security Committee would like to hear your views on the Carer's Allowance Supplement (Scotland) Bill.

The Bill would double the Carer's Allowance Supplement paid in December 2021. The December payment will cover the period from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022. Anyone who qualifies for this supplement will get the increased amount.
The supplement will be paid in Scotland to anyone who gets Carer’s Allowance on 11 October 2021.

The Social Security (Scotland) Act 2018 sets out how Carer’s Allowance Supplement is calculated. It is the difference between Job Seeker's Allowance (after allowing for inflation) and Carer's Allowance.

For this year, this means Carer's Allowance Supplement is £231.40, paid in June and December. The Bill would double the December 2021 payment.

The Bill would also give the Scottish Government the ability to increase the amount of Carer's Allowance Supplement in the future.

This will be done by regulations which will come to the Scottish Parliament as affirmative Scottish Statutory Instruments (SSIs).
